The three FSCE papers, and how Nexus helps

Gloucestershire's FSCE has three papers, and they can be sat in any order. FSCE changes its questions every year, so we practise the thinking, not guesses.

  • Adventure

English and maths, with multiple choice answers.

Nexus has adaptive 11+ Maths and English practice in the same multiple choice style, with quiz reattempts. It was not written specifically for FSCE.

  • Beacon

English and maths, with short written answers.

Nexus covers the English and maths Beacon tests, but practice is multiple choice for now. We do not yet have Beacon's short written answer format.

  • Compass

Any of the wider subjects, such as science, history or art, with multiple choice answers.

FSCE Wider Curriculum is Compass paper practice: 20 multiple choice questions in 15 minutes, every answer explained step by step, for Years 4 to 6.

What practice looks like day to day

  • Calm practice that fits school

Practice that fits around school and stays calm, which is what FSCE hopes for. Compass quizzes are 20 questions in 15 minutes.

  • Worked explanations

In FSCE Wider Curriculum, every answer comes with a step by step explanation, so your child sees why an answer is right, not just that it is.

  • One plan across subjects

Each child tracks up to 5 subjects, such as 11+ Maths, 11+ English and FSCE Wider Curriculum, all within one Elevate plan.

Pick a card, see Nexus up close

Tap through the deck to see four real screens from inside Nexus, exactly as your child would meet them.

A Nexus multiple choice maths question about a space probe whose energy level dropped by 20 per cent during a mission, reaching 80 units, asking for the level before the mission. Five answer options are shown: 100, 96, 400, 64 and 10 units.
A Nexus multiple choice English question about a story the child has read, asking through whose eyes readers mainly follow the events of the story. Five answer options are shown.
A Nexus art question showing two real paintings side by side, asking which sentence compares how the artists made the lines and texture in them. Four answer options are shown.
A Nexus worked explanation shown after a quiz, going step by step through an algorithms question about a toy beetle moving along a strip of tiles numbered 1 to 6.

Questions parents ask

What are the three FSCE papers?

In Gloucestershire, Adventure covers English and maths with multiple choice answers. Beacon covers English and maths with short written answers. Compass covers any wider subject, such as science, history or art, with multiple choice answers.

Is this FSCE's own material?

No. FSCE publishes no practice papers, and its questions change every year, so we do not copy or guess them. FSCE Wider Curriculum is built for the thinking Compass asks for. Maths and English practice is general 11+ practice, not written specifically for FSCE.

Which years is it for, and how do I set it up?

FSCE Wider Curriculum is for Years 4 to 6. Each child tracks up to 5 subjects. In your child's profile, open Subjects to Track and tick FSCE Wider Curriculum alongside 11+ Maths and 11+ English.

Does my child practise Beacon's written answers?

Not yet. Nexus covers the English and maths that Beacon tests, but all practice is multiple choice today. So it helps with the subject content, though not with the format of writing short answers.
